The story begins with Stargirl, a new student in seventeen year old Leo's high school class, the likes of whom no one has ever seen before. Up till now she had been homeschooled, and as a result some of her classmates say she is goofy, some crazy, some that her parents were circus acrobats, but everyone agrees on one thing: she is different. She carries a ukulele around, sings happy birthday to her fellow classmates, and has a pet rat, Cinnamon. She becomes a cheerleader and reaches her peak of popularity. Then she is featured on The Hot Seat, a school TV special run by Leo. She is questioned on camera by the "jury," as is custom. But the jury goes wild, ridiculing and slandering her. She is shunned, popularity drops to zero, and she becomes Leo's girlfriend. Whaaaat? Where did that come from? Leo and Stargirl are a couple. Just like that. Shortly Leo realizes that he is being shunned, too, just for associating with her. He asks her to become normal, she does over a period of time, she wins the state oratorical competition, comes back, no one is there to greet her, she breaks up with Leo, becomes her regular self again, does the bunny hop, and is never heard from again.
